Bernard Austin Harper, of Spartanburg, passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on August 29, 1930, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he was the son of the late John Walter Harper and Eulala Lavender Harper.
Bernard devoted many years as a volunteer for area fire departments, reflecting his principles of selflessness and community service. He later retired from Kohler, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and commitment. His military service in the United States Army, where he proudly served on the front lines in Korea, exemplified his courage and dedication to his country.
A loving husband for 71 years, Bernard dearly missed his wife, Lena Harper, who passed away in 2022. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with love and warmth.
Known for his caring nature and the ability to make friends wherever he went, Bernard left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew him. An active member of the Shriner's and a Mason with Lone Oak Lodge #372, he was always ready to lend a hand to those in need.
Bernard enjoyed teaching friends and family how to ski during visits to the lake house, sharing his passion for the outdoors. Additionally, he was a huge fan of the Atlanta Braves and loved to play and coach softball, and simply enjoying life.
He is survived by his children, Trent Harper (Angie) of Fripp Island, SC, and Tamara Cole (Lynn) of Spartanburg, SC. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Tyler Cole (Morgan) of Simpsonville, SC; Jordan Cole (Renee) of Spartanburg, SC; and Austin Harper (Tiffany) of Chesnee, SC; his adored great-grandchildren, Adrian Bernard Cole and Jett Austin Harper. Bernard is also remembered by his siblings, John L. Harper, Geraldine Gosnell, Hazel Pauline Tyre, and Sandra Harper. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Roy D. Harper, Margaret J. Hines, and Norman L. Harper.
A visitation to honor Bernard's life will be held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Monday, November 3, 2025, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, with interment to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Monty King and military honors by the United States Army.
