Ann Cooley Canter

January 15, 1932 — October 26, 2023

Spartanburg

Zenith "Ann" Cooley Canter, age 91, of Spartanburg, passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2023, leaving behind cherished memories and an indelible mark on the lives she touched. She was born on January 15, 1932, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, and was the daughter of the late, Volney Frank Cooley and Lillian Alice Hines Cooley.

She graduated with a bachelor's degree in education from Furman University, paving the way for a successful career as an English Teacher until her daughters were born and she chose to stay home and raise them as well as provide a warm and loving home for her family.  Beyond her professional accomplishments, Ann will be remembered for her impeccable sense of fashion. Petite and always elegantly dressed, she favored shopping at Talbots, where she would find attire that perfectly reflected her refined taste. Her elegant presence brought joy to those around her and served as an inspiration to embrace one's unique style.

Outside of the classroom, Ann found joy in spending quality time with her loved ones. She adored taking long car rides with her granddaughters and creating lasting memories together. One of their favorite destinations was Cooley Farms, where they would immerse themselves in the beauty of her family’s farm, eat strawberry ice cream, and enjoy each other's company.  As a child herself, Ann fondly reminisced about picking peaches and spending time in the peach shed. These cherished moments from her youth shaped her appreciation for nature's gifts and instilled in her a deep sense of gratitude for simplicity and natural beauty.

Ann possessed a feisty and often sassy personality that left an impact on everyone she encountered. With just a few words, she could convey a range of emotions and captivate audiences with stories from her past. Her wit added sparkle to conversations while showcasing her unique ability to connect with others on many levels.

Beyond teaching and storytelling, Ann indulged in various hobbies and interests. She found solace in tending to her garden at home, adorning the outside of her home with vibrant and fragrant flowers. For 45 years, she welcomed family and friends into her lovingly cultivated space, creating an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality. Additionally, Ann found peace in the simple act of walking through her neighborhood daily where she greeted and spoke with her nearby friends.

Ann's passing leaves a void in the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She was predeceased by her husband of more than 60 years, Reginald Canter, and their daughter, Carol Regina Canter Willner. She is survived and will be dearly missed by her two granddaughters, Dr. Megan David and her husband, Matthew Snider; as well as Morgan Willner, and long-time friend Tracy Kirkland, along with her many other friends and family.
