It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alice Layne Asbury Prince, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and devoted servant of the Lord. She departed this life on Saturday, July 6, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of faith and an unwavering dedication to her family.
Born on June 12, 1932, in Tazewell County, Virginia, Alice grew up with a strong sense of family values and a deep commitment to her faith. She was a graduate of McClain’s Business College and worked as a bookkeeper at First National Bank in Bluefield, West Virginia. She married Howard Prince on February 23, 1957, and they were blessed with two children, Kim and Jayne. She and her husband, Howard, shared a true love story with a marriage that lasted for 67 years. Their marriage was a true partnership. She supported him as he held offices in many community organizations and there was no household chore he wouldn’t handle. They shared a love of sports, the outdoors, and gardening, which was Alice’s passion. As a mother she was active in all of her daughters’ activities. She was always the “Home Room Mother,” PTA volunteer, and was a Red Cross volunteer in the clinic at Tennessee High School. She instilled the importance of a church community in her daughters by serving in many roles such as a volunteer with the choir and nursery programs. She loved her Sunday School classes and especially her role of sending notes and cards of encouragement to church members.
When she and Howard retired to Spartanburg in 1994, Alice was a faithful member of First Baptist Spartanburg, where she was an avid member of Young at Heart and a regular attendee of her weekly Sunday School class. Their grandsons, Bert and Jack, brought them both immense joy and a tremendous sense of purpose in their later years.
Alice is predeceased by her beloved husband of 67 years, Howard, who passed just six weeks earlier, and her parents, George and Virginia Asbury. She is survived by her sister, Frances Callum of Roswell, Georgia, her children, Kim Prince of Greenville, South Carolina and Jayne Prince West of Spartanburg, South Carolina (Bob), and her grandchildren, Bert West of Clemson, South Carolina and Jack West of Charlotte, North Carolina. Alice’s life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and service. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew her, and her memory will serve to guide and inspire us.
A celebration of her life will be held in the Davis Chapel at First Baptist Spartanburg, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29306 at Noon on Thursday, July 11, 2024. Visitation will be held following the service. A private graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Garden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Spartanburg First Baptist Benevolence Fund, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, South Carolina 29306.
The family would like to thank the Interim Hospice Team for their patience and loving care over the past two years.
