Albert "Chip" Burgess Iii

December 18, 1943 — February 6, 2022

Albert F. “Chip” Burgess III, 78, of Auburn, Maine, formerly of Anderson, SC, died Sunday, February 6, 2022, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris, Maine, after a brief illness. Born December 18, 1943 in Anderson, SC, he was the son of the late Col (Ret) Albert F. Burgess, Jr. and Sara Baskin Burgess.

Al earned his BA and Master’s degrees from Clemson University and was a diehard Tiger fan.

A former US Army Officer and Vietnam veteran, Mr. Burgess was awarded two bronze stars for his service.  He was an active member of both the Lions Club in Maine and of the Anderson (SC) Lions Club. His working career was predominately with  J.C Penney in Anderson and later in Auburn, Maine.

A devout Christian, he was a former member of First Baptist Church, Anderson and was currently a member of the United Methodist Church of Auburn, Maine.

Survivors include his daughter, Katie Steenerson (Chris) of Mauldin, SC and grandson, Chandler Steenerson, his brother, Richard Burgess (Jenny) of Spartanburg, SC, and his sister, Katherine Duttweiler (James) of San Antonio, TX, along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, infant sister, Elizabeth Ansley Burgess, and brother, Warren Liddell Burgess.

A Graveside service with Military Honors will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 19, 2022 at the New Silverbook Cemetery, 440 East Shockley Ferry Road, Anderson, SC 29621, officiated by The Reverend Mark Reed with music provided by Mr. Peter Moore, violinist.  Honorary pallbearers will be Chris Steenerson, Richard Burgess, Sr., Ward Burgess, Richard Burgess, Jr., James Duttweiler, Thomas Duttweiler, and Patrick Duttweiler. A memorial service will be held in Auburn, Maine later this spring.

The family would like to give special thanks to Donald and Lucy Peck of the Auburn American Legion Post for their friendship and care for their Brother-In-Arms, and to The Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris for their excellent care.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be sent to the Anderson Lions Club PO Box 1524, Anderson, SC 29622 or to the Auburn Methodist Church 439 Park Avenue Auburn, Maine 04210.
