We mourn the passing of Alan Kwing Hung Tam, a devoted husband, doting father, grandfather and thriving entrepreneur, who died on March 29, 2026, at the age of 85.
Alan was born December 3, 1940, towards the beginning of World War II in Hong Kong; he came later to the United States with only rudimentary English skills. With stops in San Francisco, CA; Atlanta, GA and Columbia, SC, Alan moved to Spartanburg with his wife Anita in 1974 to operate the New China Restaurant. He often asked his children, "Do you know how many egg rolls I need to make to afford that?" Alan and Anita sold the New China Restaurant in 2000, yet it remains a hallmark of the Chinese food scene in Spartanburg.
Alan was the epitome of the American Dream, working tirelessly to put his two sons through private school and college, while building a business from the ground up. His achievements also include publishing books and newspaper articles in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland, despite only having a grade school education.
Alan is survived by his sons Johnny and Andy Tam; Johnny’s wife, Cindy; brother, George Kwing Lau Tam and his wife Alice Oi Ho; grandchildren, Julian, Christian and Jocelyn Tam; nephews, Tony and Alex Tam; and Tony’s wife Kelly and their children, Abby and Carter Tam. Other family include brother-in-law Derrick Tang and his wife Fona of Inman, and their daughters, Winky Tang and Ling Tang.
Family will receive friends from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm, Tuesday, April 7, 2026, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
The funeral service will begin at 1:00 pm, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel followed by the burial in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
Flowers will be accepted.
