Adele Gwynn

November 30, 1919 — July 3, 2009

Adele Trowbridge Harris Gwynn, 89, of Greenville, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, after a short illness. Born November 30, 1919, in Flushing, NY, she was the daughter of the late Robert W. and Virginia Cooke Harris. Adele was educated at the College of William and Mary and was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. She moved to Greenville in 1945 after her marriage to John Bowie Gwynn who predeceased her. They met in Panama where she worked as a civilian secretary, and he was stationed with the U.S. Army. Adele retired as a legal secretary from Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak, & Stewart P.C. She enjoyed bridge, the beach, travel, reading, painting, and writing poetry in her retirement years. Her special interests were the cultural arts of music, theater, and fine arts. Survivors include a daughter, Virginia Marie Gwynn, a son, Robert Blackwell Gwynn, and a granddaughter, Meredith Gwynn, all of Greenville. She was predeceased by a son, Andrew Keene Gwynn; and a brother, H. Trowbridge Harris. She is also survived by a sister, Carol Harris Clark of Madison, CT; two special nieces, Christi Garland of San Francisco, CA, and Rachel Bertoni of Columbia, SC; and a special cousin, Elise Knapp of New Haven, CT. The family would like to extend special thanks to Shirley Balmer, a dear friend who was faithful in her visits to Adele. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 3, 2009, at Oakwood Cemetery in Spartanburg conducted by the Rev. B. Wayne Kinyon. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
