Dorothy Maxine Gillespie May, 84, of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, November 9, 2017, at Summit Hills Retirement Community. Born August 17, 1933, in Walhalla, SC, she was the daughter of the late Major Teccoa Gillespie and Inez Elva Rowland Gillespie and widow of Victor Lemuel May. She was devoted to her family and loved spending time with her granddaughters. A registered nurse for over 50 years, Mrs. May was employed as a school nurse with Caesar Rodney School District in Dover, Delaware for 27 years. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Dover, Delaware, and active in the School Nurses Association. She loved pets, enjoyed antiques and historic homes restoration, as well as serving as a Cub Scout Den Mother for her sons. She was a graduate of Union High School, Union, SC; Spartanburg General Hospital-School of Nursing; and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing at Wilmington College, Wilmington, DE. Surviving are her sons, Alan May (Teri) of Beaufort, SC, Robert May of Greenville, SC, and Scott May of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, Kaelon Stier (Chris), Taylor Williamson (Forrest), and Jesse May, all of Columbia, SC; one great-grandson; brother, Ralph Gillespie (Lena) of Spartanburg, SC; sister, Evelyn Winkler of Greer, SC; brother-in-law, Ken May (Frances) of Columbia, SC; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Ray Gillespie. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 PM Sunday, November 12, 2017, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, 235 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306, with funeral services following at 3:00 PM, conducted by the Rev. Robert M. Vincent. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens, 1720 Whitmire Hwy, Union, SC 29379. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 901 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302 online at www.alz.org.
