Martha Wharton

November 23, 1923 — December 30, 2018

Martha Elizabeth Wright Wharton, 95, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 30, 2018, at White Oak Estates. Born November 23, 1923, in McKenzie, TN, she was the daughter of the late Dr. William Talmage Wright and Mary Lucy Welch Wright and widow of Weir Edward Wharton, to whom she was married 60 years. Martha graduated in three years from Bethel College in McKenzie, TN, and received her Master's Degree in library science from George Peabody Library School in Nashville, TN in 1945. While working at the public library in Charleston, WV, she met and married the love of her life Weir Edward Wharton. Martha taught at the Catholic School in Biloxi, MS while Ed was stationed at Keesler AFB. In 1955 they moved to Charlottesville, VA where Ed attended the University of Virginia and Martha worked in the University Law Library. In 1960 they moved to Spartanburg, SC where Martha was the reference librarian at the Spartanburg County Public Library and later at the Wofford College Library. While at Wofford she mentored and was like a mom to many students, she also did research for professors who were writing books. After retiring from Wofford, Martha worked at Spartanburg Technical College Library. Martha was a longtime member of Second Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her children, Mary Beth Wagner (Eddie) of Moore, SC, John Wharton (Vickie) of Spartanburg, SC, Barbara Wharton of Raeford, NC, Steve Wharton and Bill Wharton (Cynthia) all of Campobello, SC; grandchildren, Ashley, Marcus, Jessica, Joshua, and Conner; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Barbara Papetti. Visitation will be 12:30-1:30 PM Saturday, January 19, 2019, at Second Presbyterian Church, 438 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303, with a service to celebrate Martha's life following at 2:00 PM, conducted by Pastor Jason Moore. The family would like to express heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staffs of Eden Terrace Assisted Living and White Oak Estates for the wonderful care that Martha received during her final 14 years.
