John Macphail

January 20, 1924 — December 15, 2017

John A. MacPhail, 93, of Skylyn Place, Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, December 15, 2017. Born January 20, 1924, he was the son of the late Donald Cameron MacPhail and Marie Trapp MacPhail. Mr. MacPhail was a graduate of Washington and Jefferson College and Dickinson School of Law in Pennsylvania. He served in the U. S. Army Field Artillery in Europe during World War II. Born in Johnstown, PA, he lived most of his adult life in Gettysburg, PA, where he practiced law and served as a lower court and appellate court judge for 21 years. He and his wife moved to Spartanburg in 1995 where he served as a volunteer mediator of the South Carolina Juvenile Justice Commission, a driver for Mobile Meals, and a server at the Second Presbyterian Church soup kitchen. An active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mr. MacPhail sang in the choir, served on several committees, and was appointed to the Permanent Judicial Commission of Foothills Presbytery. He was a member of various legal bar associations, Masonic bodies, and veteran's organizations in Pennsylvania and was the recipient of Honorary Doctor of Laws Degrees from Gettysburg College and Dickinson School of Law. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Jeanne Spangler MacPhail; four children, Bonnie Shuman, her husband Dr. Thom Shuman of Columbus, OH, and their son, Edward Reed "Teddy" Shuman; Deborah MacPhail of Spartanburg, SC; Heather MacPhail of Fairfield, OH, and Paul MacPhail, his wife Valerie MacPhail of Spartanburg, SC, and their children, Elly Keyser and husband Jon Keyser and their children, James Keyser and Thomas Keyser, Kaela Hammond and her husband Tim Hammond, and Matthew MacPhail. A service honoring his memory will be conducted at 4:00 PM Thursday, December 28, 2017, in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by Mr. Holt Andrews and Dr. Thom Shuman. Visitation will follow the services at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts be made to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or Spartanburg Soup Kitchen, 136 South Forest Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
