Jewell Hale Wharton, 86, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at White Oak Estates-Spartanburg. She was born July 17, 1932 in Memphis, TN at the Methodist Hospital in Shelby County, the second daughter of Mary Ewell Chaffin and Elijah Houston Hale. Jewell attended Central High School in Memphis, TN. She married William Forrest Wharton on June 18, 1955. They met on a blind date and were engaged six weeks later. She followed her husband through dental school, then while he was serving in the United States Naval Reserves where he was an officer stationed in Pensacola, FL, and finally during his residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, LA. Upon completion of his residency they moved to Greenville, MS where they established their home and his practice of oral surgery. While in Greenville, Jewell was active in many organizations, however the one she most enjoyed was the Greenville Garden Club. They lived in Greenville, MS for over 40 years. In 2004, Bill and Jewell moved to Spartanburg, SC where they could be close to their children and grandchildren. They quickly joined Bethlehem Baptist Church where they continued to be members. Jewell immensely enjoyed being surrounded by her four grandchildren, Maegan Watson (Ryan) (26), Thomas Wharton (24), Steven Massey (15), and Perry Massey (12). She leaves behind two children and their families, Tom and Boyce Wharton of Moore, SC and Thomas and Lynne Massey of Columbia, SC. Jewell was predeceased by her husband, Dr. William Wharton; and her sister, Mary Louise Muse. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 4, 2018, at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 797 Old Georgia Rd., Moore, SC 29369, by The Rev. James L. Oliver. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethlehem Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 229, Roebuck, SC 29376.
