Hilda Cope

Hilda Tennyson Cope, 85, of Spartanburg died Thursday, February 8, 2018 at White Oak Manor at North Grove Spartanburg and was also under the care of Hospice Care of SC. She was the wife of Walter Brown Cope. Born January 15, 1933 in Inman, she was the daughter of the late George Benton and Ruth Hall Tennyson. Hilda graduated from Gramling High School and Winthrop University with a BS in elementary education. She was a former member of the Winthrop Executive Board and treasurer of the Alumni Association. Hilda was a retired elementary school teacher. She taught elementary science at Park Hills Elementary and later at Campobello-Gramling Elementary. Hilda led in the establishment of the Outdoor Science Center at Campobello- Gramling School. She was honored in 1977 as An Outstanding Elementary Teacher in America. She served on the SC Textbook Adoption Committee for elementary science and was a consultant to SCETV for programming for elementary science. Wherever she went, Hilda was often greeted warmly by her former science students. Hilda served as president of the Spartanburg Educators Federal Credit Union. She also served on the board of the Shepherd's Center and was a past president of the Fernbrook Condominium Association. A former member of the Blue Ridge Chapter of Ninety-Nines, the organization for women pilots, Hilda earned her private pilot's license in 1972. A devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, Hilda served as a deacon, circle leader and treasurer for Presbyterian Women. Her warm and ready smile lit up church activities she attended and is already missed. In addition to her husband, Hilda is survived by two daughters, Catherine Goley Shockley of Spartanburg and Lauren Goley Hammond (Scott) of Mount Pleasant, a stepson, Chumley Cope (Joan) of Spartanburg, six grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister, Melba Ruth Tennyson and a stepson, James Cope. A service honoring her memory will be conducted at 2:00 PM Friday, February 16, 2018, at First Presbyterian Church Chapel, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by The Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Evans. The family will receive visitors in the church parlor following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shepherd's Center, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
