David Allen Kerchmar, 72, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, July 23, 2018, at RoseCrest HealthCare Center-Inman. A longtime Spartanburg resident, he was born February 17, 1946, a son of the late Alfred Peter and Winona Bolt Kerchmar. A U. S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he was a 1964 graduate of Spartanburg High School and a 1968 graduate of The Citadel with a degree in history. He served with MACV Team 56 and Mobile Advisory Team 101 and retired from the U. S. Army Reserves having obtained the rank of Lt. Colonel. He returned to Spartanburg and continued the operation of Custom Cleaners as a well-respected family business from 1984 until his retirement in 2016. David was active in many civic organizations and was a past-president of the Spartanburg Optimist Club. Survivors include his wife of 27 years, Dudley Huffman Kerchmar; two sons, David Brantley Kerchmar of Spartanburg, SC and William Patrick Kerchmar of Westminster, SC; a daughter, Anna Paige Kerchmar Collins of Spartanburg, SC; a stepson, Ronald Lawrence Fulmer of Mountain View, CA; a sister, Dr. Patricia Kerchmar Tollison of Austin, TX; a brother, Colonel James A. Kerchmar of Fayetteville, NC; 10 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild. A graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, July 28, 2018, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by The Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely.
