Chalmers Johnson

Chalmers Eugene "Gene" Johnson, 79, of Spartanburg, SC died Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born February 23, 1942 in Inman, SC, he was the son of the late Huey Chalmers and Virginia Crow Johnson. A U.S. Army Veteran, Mr. Johnson was a shift supervisor with Union Camp Corporation for 40 years. He was a devoted member of First Baptist Spartanburg, volunteering with the media and "Encouraging Word" ministries. Mr. Johnson was an amazing husband, father and grandfather, was a selfless man that loved carpentry, fishing and his family. Survivors include his wife Jane Hopper Johnson; son, Samuel Reid Johnson of Spartanburg, SC; granddaughter, Ani Johnson of Spartanburg, SC; brothers, Danny Johnson and David Johnson both of Inman, SC and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Ophelia Bishop of Inman, SC. A Celebration of Life service, conducted by the church, will be held 2:00 PM Sunday, March 7, 2021 at First Baptist Spartanburg, by The Rev. Britt Dillard and Mr. Jim Gardner. Visitation will be following the service at the church. Masks and social distancing are expected. No flowers please, memorials may be made to First Baptist Spartanburg, Media Ministry or Encouraging Word Ministry, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. If sending flowers, however, please deliver to the church for the service. The J. F.
