My Financial Advisor Doesn’t Think It’s a Good Idea to Preplan My Funeral — What You Should Know

The butcher, the baker, the candle stick maker. Does anyone go to the butcher for a candle? Would anyone even think of asking the funeral director for investment advice?

It’s common to receive different perspectives when making important life decisions—especially when they involve both finances and end-of-life planning. If your financial advisor has concerns about preplanning your funeral, it’s helpful to understand where those concerns come from and how they fit into the bigger picture.

Financial advisors are highly trained in managing investments, protecting assets, and helping clients grow wealth over time. Their primary focus is ensuring your financial resources are used wisely and remain accessible for your needs and goals. From that perspective, they may question whether setting aside funds for a prepaid funeral is the most flexible or efficient use of your money.

However, funeral planning is a very different area of expertise.

Funeral directors specialize in helping families navigate one of life’s most difficult moments—the loss of a loved one. They understand not only the logistics of planning a service, but also the emotional weight families carry during that time. Preplanning a funeral is not simply a financial decision; it is also a personal and practical one that can ease a significant burden on those left behind.

When a death occurs, families are often faced with making important decisions quickly, while also coping with grief. At the same time, they must determine how to pay for the services. Without a plan in place, this can create added stress, uncertainty, and sometimes financial strain.

This is where both professionals can play important—but distinct—roles.

A financial advisor can help you determine how funeral expenses fit into your overall financial plan. They can advise on liquidity, tax implications, and how accessing funds at an unexpected time might impact your investments.

A funeral director, on the other hand, can guide you through the planning process itself—helping you make informed decisions about the type of service you want, the associated costs, and the options available for advance funding.

If you are considering preplanning your funeral, here are a few important questions to explore with your funeral provider:

            What payment options are available?

Many funeral homes offer installment plans that allow you to pay over time rather than in a single lump sum.

What happens if death occurs before payments are complete?

Some plans are backed by insurance products, which may cover the remaining balance.

Is there protection against rising costs?

Funeral prices can increase over time, so it’s important to understand whether your plan locks in today’s prices or adjusts in the future.

Are the funds transferable or refundable?

Flexibility may be important if your plans or location change.

Equally important is having an open conversation with your spouse or family. Consider questions such as:

If something happens unexpectedly, where will the funds come from?

Will accessing those funds create tax consequences or financial hardship?

Would having a funded plan in place make the process easier for your loved ones?

Ultimately, preplanning your funeral is about more than finances—it’s about clarity, control, and care for your family. By separating the roles of your financial advisor and your funeral director, and allowing each to contribute their expertise, you can make a well-informed decision that aligns with both your financial goals and your personal wishes.

The best approach is not choosing one perspective over the other, but thoughtfully combining both to create a plan that works for you and those you love.

Do you, or someone you know, turn first to the obituary page each day? Some may see it as a somber habit, but in reality, an obituary is far from morbid. It is a lasting tribute — a way to honor a life, preserve a legacy, and ensure that a story continues to be told long after a person is gone.

, families are faced with many responsibilities in a very short time: notifying family and friends, attending to legal matters, and planning meaningful services. In the midst of these urgent tasks, writing an obituary can easily feel overwhelming or even be overlooked. Yet, it is one of the most meaningful steps in the remembrance process.

our funeral directors understand the weight of these moments and are here to guide you with compassion and care. Crafting an obituary is not simply about listing dates and details — it is about capturing a life. The words chosen should reflect the individuality, personality, and spirit of your loved one. Whether it’s a lifelong hobby, a cherished tradition, a favorite restaurant, or a career marked by dedication, these personal touches transform an obituary into a heartfelt portrait rather than a simple notice.

shares immediate information — service details, visitation times, and announcements of passing. But it also becomes a permanent record of a life lived. For generations, families have turned to obituaries to trace their heritage, reconnect with family histories, and rediscover stories that might otherwise have been lost. In many cases, an obituary becomes one of the few enduring records of a person’s existence, accessible for decades or even centuries to come.

For this reason, we encourage families to publish obituaries not only in local newspapers but also online. As a courtesy to the families we serve, we provide complimentary obituary listings on our website, offering loved ones near and far a place to gather, share memories, and leave personal tributes. These online memorials remain permanently available, creating a lasting space for remembrance and reflection.

Writing an obituary may feel difficult during a time of grief, but it is also a profound act of love. It is the final opportunity to tell a story, celebrate a journey, and ensure that a life is never reduced to silence.

None of us lives forever. But through a thoughtfully written obituary, a legacy can endure — remembered, shared, and cherished for years to come.

Here in South Carolina, food is often synonymous with comfort and fellowship. From coffee and light refreshments to a full catered meal, the menu can reflect the tastes and traditions your loved one held dear. If barbecue was your dad’s favorite, consider serving a classic barbecue spread. If your mother never missed dessert, a thoughtfully arranged dessert buffet may be the perfect tribute. Each dish can tell part of their story while offering warmth and hospitality to your guests.

regularly serve families throughout Spartanburg and surrounding areas who have questions—or have heard misconceptions—about burial. We believe clarity and education are essential during times of planning and loss.

Below are four common burial myths, thoughtfully addressed:

Myth 1: A burial vault is required for burial.

Burial vaults were originally designed to help protect caskets and support the surrounding ground, which can also reduce long-term cemetery maintenance. However, under South Carolina law, a burial vault is

required. The decision to use a vault is a personal one, based on individual preferences or cemetery regulations.

Myth 2: A religious official must be present at every burial.

Myth 3: There are no burial options for families who choose cremation.

does not eliminate the option for burial. Families may still hold a graveside service, and our cremation professionals can assist in selecting an appropriate urn or container for burial or placement.

Before we get too far into this blog, we want to make sure you know that it’s OK to feel more than one emotion at once. This means it’s OK to smile and enjoy the festivities — but that you can also feel sad as you mourn the loss of a loved one. As humans, we have the emotional capability of feeling competing emotions at the same time. When it comes to your emotions, there is no “right” or “wrong” way to navigate the

When it comes to honoring a beloved family member or friend through a personalized tribute, the options are endless. Whether you make a special ornament to place on your Christmas tree each year or play his or her favorite holiday song, it’s all about choosing what brings you comfort. Instead of focusing on the empty seat at the table, you might be able to smile instead.

Whether your loved one enjoyed a specific type of casserole or checking out the holiday lights at the local zoo, you can incorporate a special activity into your holiday traditions. This can be as lighthearted or as serious as you’d like. Each family is different, and so there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

           Share Fond Memories Together

One aspect that many people encounter during the grieving process is the fear that their loved one will be forgotten and that their memory won’t live on. If this is the case for you or your family, you might consider having everyone share an important lesson they learned from your loved one — or perhaps a treasured memory. You might also write down all of these anecdotes and share them with the group at a later time.

Finding Levity in Loss: Why Some Funeral Directors Use Humor

Death is an uncomfortable subject for many people. That discomfort often extends to how we feel about the funeral profession itself. For many, the first time they step into a funeral home is after the passing of a loved one. Because of that association, funeral homes and those who work in them are often unfairly linked with morbidity.

However, it can be surprising to learn that funeral directors are not the somber, eerie figures portrayed in movies or storybooks. In reality, they are compassionate professionals who balance sensitivity with practicality—and, sometimes, even a touch of humor. While not every funeral director chooses to use comedy, some do. But why would someone in such a serious profession try to be funny? There are several meaningful reasons.

           1. Humor Eases Discomfort

Death makes people uneasy. It’s difficult to confront our own mortality, and painful to face a future without the people we love. Funeral directors understand this better than anyone. They know that humor, when used thoughtfully, can help ease that discomfort.

A lighthearted comment or a moment of laughter can be disarming in the best way—it breaks tension, allowing people to feel a little more human in a deeply emotional setting. In those moments, laughter doesn’t trivialize grief; it helps make an unbearable situation just a little easier to bear.

Funeral directors are often highly empathetic and adaptable individuals. Their goal is to provide comfort in whatever form a family most needs. For some, that comfort comes through quiet understanding. For others, it might come from a brief, unexpected moment of levity.

           2. Laughter Helps Us Cope with Grief

Laughter is more powerful than it seems. It strengthens the immune system, releases endorphins, and even reduces pain. In the context of grief, humor has been shown to ease emotional suffering.

Research has found that widows and widowers who were able to laugh and smile when remembering their loved ones experienced lower levels of depression and anxiety. While laughter cannot erase grief, it can help transform it into something more manageable.

Grief doesn’t vanish after the funeral—it evolves. Over time, it becomes what’s known as integrated grief: a gentler, ongoing presence that we carry with us. Continuing to find humor in life helps keep that grief from overwhelming us. Funeral directors may not be therapists, but by allowing moments of levity, they can support families as they begin their healing journey.

           3. Humor Reduces Stress During Funeral Planning

Planning a funeral is inherently stressful. There are countless decisions to make, and the pressure to “get it right” for a loved one can be immense. Families often question whether their choices truly reflect the wishes of the person they’ve lost.

In such emotionally charged moments, a bit of humor can be grounding. Physiologically, laughter triggers a short-term stress response—raising heart rate and blood pressure—but then brings them down to calmer levels, leaving the body relaxed. It also releases muscle tension and improves mood, making it easier to face difficult tasks.

A funeral director who uses gentle humor may be doing so intentionally—to ease your burden, help you breathe, and remind you that it’s okay to find light even in darkness.

           4. Humor Encourages Healing and Living

Funeral directors spend their careers talking about death, but they also deeply understand life. They know that when someone walks through their doors, they are often in one of the hardest moments of their existence.

Part of their role is to remind grieving families that it’s okay to keep living—and that joy and sorrow can coexist. After a loss, people often experience acute grief, a stage in which everyday life can feel impossible. Laughing may even feel wrong. But humor, used with compassion, can gently open the door back to life.

           5. Every Funeral Director Is Different

Not every funeral director incorporates humor into their work—and that’s perfectly fine. Some prefer a more formal or traditional approach. But for those who do bring levity into their profession, it’s done with care, empathy, and respect. Their goal isn’t to minimize loss, but to make a painful process a little lighter, a little more human.

Funeral directors are not the ominous figures of fiction. They are caring professionals who guide families through some of life’s most difficult transitions. And sometimes, with the right touch, a shared laugh can be one of the most healing gestures of all.

Imagine you're driving past a funeral home. As you approach, you notice individuals dressed in mourning attire exiting the facility and entering a line of vehicles—some limousines, some personal cars. Just before you pass, the vehicles begin to leave the parking lot. You’ve now encountered a

           funeral procession

—a solemn, ceremonial journey to honor a life that has ended.

While traffic laws may vary by state, there are generally accepted guidelines for how to respond respectfully and safely when encountering a funeral procession. Here's what every driver should know:

           1. Yield the Right of Way

Funeral processions are typically granted the

           right of way

in many jurisdictions. This means that even if a light changes or an intersection opens, the procession is allowed to continue without interruption—provided the lead vehicle entered legally.

Yielding is not only respectful but also prevents potential collisions. Think of it as you would yielding to an emergency vehicle: a necessary act of courtesy and safety.

           2. Do Not Cut Into a Procession

Cutting into a funeral procession is both

           disrespectful and dangerous

. In some states, it’s also illegal.

Funeral processions are intended to stay together as a unified group. Breaking that line by inserting your vehicle disrupts the solemn nature of the event and may catch other drivers off-guard, increasing the risk of accidents. Even if you're approaching an exit, it’s best to wait for the procession to pass and take an alternate route if necessary.

           3. Do Not Pass the Procession

            Similar to cutting in,

passing a funeral procession is generally discouraged

and often unlawful. Attempting to overtake a slow-moving procession—especially on a two-lane road—can be hazardous.

The only exception is on multi-lane highways, where you may carefully pass on the right if the procession is traveling in the far left lane. Always use caution and avoid disrupting the line.

           4. Identify the Last Vehicle

            Typically, the

last vehicle in a funeral procession

is marked with hazard lights and may carry two flags to indicate it is the end of the procession. Keeping an eye out for this vehicle helps ensure you don’t mistakenly merge into the procession or assume it has ended prematurely.

           5. Do Not "Tag Along"

            Attempting to

           join a funeral procession

to bypass traffic or benefit from relaxed traffic rules is inappropriate and, in some cases, illegal.

Just as following an emergency vehicle for personal gain is unacceptable, so too is inserting yourself into a funeral procession. Police officers or procession escorts are often trained to spot and address unauthorized vehicles, and you may be pulled over.

           6. Pull Over if You Can

            If conditions allow,

pulling over to let a funeral procession pass

is a courteous and safe option. This shows respect for the mourners and reduces the likelihood of conflict or confusion on the road. On narrower roads or rural routes, pulling over is often the safest course of action.

           7. Wait Patiently

Whether you're pulled over or waiting at an intersection,

           remain patient

. Do not honk, gesture, or display frustration. Even well-meaning actions, such as waving or signaling, can be misinterpreted. A silent show of patience is the most respectful response.

           A Final Note

While it can be inconvenient to encounter a slow-moving funeral procession during a busy day, it’s important to maintain perspective. For the individuals in that line of vehicles, it’s a profoundly difficult and emotional moment. The minor delay to your schedule is insignificant compared to the grief they are experiencing.

            Showing

           respect, empathy, and awareness

not only honors the deceased and supports their loved ones, but also helps maintain road safety for everyone.

Many people find solace in gathering with others, sharing memories, expressing their grief, and beginning the healing process together. For this reason, it’s recommended that families

Understanding the Cost of a Funeral: Looking for Value, Not Just Price

Like many things in life—cars, clothing, or even paper towels—funerals come in a wide range of prices. But figuring out what qualifies as a “cheap” funeral isn’t always straightforward. That’s because people have different ideas of what a funeral includes. For some, it’s a multi-day event: a visitation, a church service, a graveside committal, and even a luncheon.

When discussing funeral costs, it’s important to include everything involved—such as the casket, burial vault, cemetery plot, and any services or gatherings. Just like lunch can range from a simple sandwich to a catered meal, funeral choices vary and impact the total cost.

Before comparing prices, families should first discuss what they want and need from the funeral. What are your values, traditions, and expectations? Once that’s clear, you can begin to evaluate options realistically.

It’s also important to understand that “cheaper” often means fewer services. Like low-cost paper towels, cheaper funerals may lack quality, support, and attention to detail. You may find that things you assumed were included come with added fees, and in the end, it could cost more—financially and emotionally.

That said, a funeral can still be affordable

meaningful. Start by meeting with a local funeral director. Don’t just ask, “How much does a funeral cost?” Instead, schedule a conversation. Come prepared with your budget and a clear idea of what you're looking for. Be open and honest.

Remember: You’re not shopping for “funerals,” plural. You’re planning one important event to honor a loved one. Focus on finding value—something that’s both respectful and within your means.

And if you’re planning your own funeral in advance, keep in mind: funerals are for the living. They are a way for family and friends to grieve, celebrate, and begin healing. Your choices can help them do just that.

The People Who Make a Funeral Possible: A Look Inside the Funeral Home

When planning a loved one’s funeral, one of the most important individuals guiding you through the process is the funeral director. As your primary point of contact at the funeral home, the funeral director is there to offer support, care, and expertise during a profoundly difficult time. They are responsible for overseeing every aspect of the service, from viewings and visitations to burials and cremations.

Much of their work, however, happens behind the scenes. Funeral directors coordinate transportation for the deceased, arrange receptions, complete necessary legal and administrative paperwork, and ensure that all logistics are handled with professionalism and compassion.

While the funeral director plays a central role, they are far from alone in their efforts. Especially in larger funeral homes, a dedicated team works together to support grieving families and ensure each service is meaningful and respectful.

Who Works at a Funeral Home?

           Embalmers

An essential part of funeral preparation, embalmers are highly trained professionals who preserve and prepare the body for viewing. In the United States, approximately 50% of individuals are embalmed—a process that helps the deceased appear as they were remembered in life. Embalmers must complete formal education in mortuary science, hold a state license, and often complete an apprenticeship under an experienced professional.

In many cases, embalmers also serve as

           mortuary cosmetologists

(sometimes called desairologists). In this role, they apply makeup and style hair to ensure the loved one’s appearance is as familiar and comforting as possible. However, in larger funeral homes, dedicated mortuary cosmetologists may be brought in to focus exclusively on this delicate work.

           Funeral Attendants

Funeral attendants work under the direction of the funeral director to manage the physical aspects of the service. They prepare rooms, transport caskets, greet guests, and ensure that every detail is handled smoothly. Their quiet presence behind the scenes allows families to focus on remembrance and healing.

           Advanced Planning Advisors

Planning ahead for a funeral can be one of the most compassionate gifts someone can give their family. Advanced planning advisors guide individuals through the process of pre-arranging their own funeral, helping to ease the burden on loved ones when the time comes. These advisors document preferences and coordinate with funeral directors to carry out those wishes when needed.

           Aftercare Specialists

Support doesn’t end when the funeral does. Many funeral homes provide aftercare services to assist families as they navigate grief in the weeks and months following a loss. These team members—who may be grief counselors or hold other supportive roles—are there to ensure no one has to mourn alone. Their presence reinforces the funeral home's ongoing commitment to the community.

           Administrative Professionals

Behind every well-organized funeral is a team of skilled administrators and administrative assistants. These individuals manage schedules, handle records, and provide vital support to the funeral director and other staff. They also help create a welcoming, respectful environment for families and guests.

A Team Built on Compassion and Community

Although the funeral director is often the face families see most, the entire team at a funeral home plays a role in honoring a life well lived. From embalmers and attendants to grief counselors and administrative staff, each person brings empathy, professionalism, and a commitment to serving others during one of life’s most difficult moments.

Working in a funeral home requires not only technical expertise but also a deep sense of compassion. These professionals are united by a shared purpose: to care for families, honor lives, and support their communities with dignity and respect.

What to Talk to Your Funeral Director About

Planning a funeral begins with building a relationship with your funeral home. That relationship is built on clear, honest communication. Here are the key topics to discuss with your funeral director:

            1.

Start with the Right Funeral Home

Before planning begins, choose a funeral home that fits your family’s needs. If your loved one preplanned, this decision may already be made. If not, start with phone screenings, then schedule in-person meetings with potential funeral directors. Ask questions like:

How long have you served this community?

How many guests can your facility accommodate?

Can you accommodate religious or cultural traditions?

Do you offer services like printed programs or tribute videos?

What service options do you provide?

What casket and urn selections are available?

            2.

           Bring Biographical Information

Once you’ve chosen a funeral home, you’ll begin planning. Your funeral director will need detailed information about your loved one to:

            Write the obituary

Complete legal documents (e.g., cremation permits, death certificates)

           Bring the following information:

            Full name

            Social Security number

Names of spouse, children, and parents (include mother’s maiden name)

            Work and education history

            Military service

            Memberships (churches, clubs, organizations)

           You can also bring:

            Recent and childhood photos

Personal items or memorabilia (e.g., artwork, hobbies)

These help personalize the service and create a meaningful tribute.

            3.

           Discuss Personalization

Funeral services can be tailored to reflect your loved one’s life and personality. Share stories and meaningful details with your director. Ideas include:

Displaying personal items (e.g., golf clubs, handmade crafts)

Choosing specific music, readings, or decorations

Highlighting hobbies or passions in the ceremony

Your funeral director can offer creative suggestions based on their experience.

           What is a Columbarium Niche?

A columbarium niche is a dignified and respectful final resting place for cremated remains. Typically constructed above ground, niches are integrated into a wall composed of individual compartments, each designed to hold an urn containing the ashes of one person. These niches are commonly available in cemeteries and, in some cases, churches.

Columbarium niches may vary in design. Some are enclosed with glass panels, allowing the urn and accompanying memorabilia to be visible, while others are sealed with stone, resembling miniature mausoleums. Some columbarium walls are open or housed within a dedicated building, while others are freestanding outdoors. The aesthetic appeal of some columbaria is notable, featuring backlit glass niches that beautifully display decorative urns.

The standard niche size is generally 9 x 9 x 9 inches, which limits the size and type of urn that can be used. In some cases, the architectural design may further restrict urn options, making it important to select a container that fits appropriately within the available space.

While it is legal in many states to scatter cremated remains in a meaningful location, each jurisdiction has specific regulations that must be followed. Additionally, scattering may not always be feasible or may not meet the emotional needs of loved ones who seek a permanent place for remembrance. A columbarium niche offers a tangible, lasting memorial where family and friends can gather and reflect.

Choosing cremation does not limit the type of memorial service that can be held. Families may still opt for a traditional funeral service with visitation before cremation, or choose a faith-based or celebratory gathering, or a combination of both. Ultimately, the decision to be cremated should include thoughtful consideration of the family's wishes and the importance of a meaningful and accessible final resting place for the remains.

How to Write and Deliver a Eulogy

Writing and delivering a eulogy can feel overwhelming. How do you sum up a person’s life in just a few minutes? And if you're not used to public speaking, the idea of standing in front of others can add to the pressure. But remember: this moment is about honoring someone’s life — not delivering a perfect speech.

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

            1.

           Take Time to Prepare

A eulogy is not something to do off the cuff. Even experienced speakers do better with preparation and structure.

            2.

           Introduce Yourself

Begin by briefly stating who you are and your relationship to the person who has passed. If you are speaking on behalf of the family, thank the attendees for being there.

            3.

           Outline Their Life

Start with basic details: where and when they were born, names of family members, significant life events, education, career, and major milestones.

            4.

           Capture Their Essence

Think about what made them unique. Use simple words like “kind,” “loyal,” “funny,” or “hardworking.” These qualities resonate and help paint a clear picture.

            5.

           Talk to Others

Interview friends and family. Ask open-ended questions like:

            How did you know them?

What stands out when you think of them?

Do you have a favorite memory or story?

What should not be left out?

If possible, record these conversations. They’ll help you craft a meaningful tribute.

            6.

           Include a Story

Personal stories bring a eulogy to life. Choose one that illustrates their character. Humor is welcome — if it feels natural.

            7.

           Offer a Thoughtful Farewell

Conclude with a goodbye. If you're unsure how, use a favorite quote, poem, scripture, or song lyric — especially one the deceased loved.

            8.

           Practice

Read your eulogy out loud. Make edits for clarity and length (aim for 3–8 minutes). If others are speaking, coordinate to avoid repeating stories.

            9.

           Deliver with Care

Speak slowly and clearly. It’s normal to feel emotional — pause, breathe, and continue when ready. Practicing in advance will help you feel more confident.

Happy 250th Birthday, U.S. Army – Honoring 250 Years of Service and Sacrifice

           Introduction:

On June 14, 2025, we celebrate a historic milestone—the 250th birthday of the United States Army. Established in 1775 by the Second Continental Congress, the Continental Army became the foundation of America's national defense, even before the Declaration of Independence. For two and a half centuries, the Army has stood as a symbol of courage, resilience, and commitment to the nation.

           A Legacy of Service:

The Army’s story is deeply interwoven with the history of the United States. From the Revolutionary War and the defense of American soil in 1812, to its pivotal roles in the Civil War, World Wars, and beyond, the Army has led efforts to protect freedom and uphold national security. In every era, it has evolved to meet new challenges, both at home and abroad.

           Building a Modern Force:

The Army began with ten companies of riflemen and quickly expanded to include vital branches such as the Infantry, Engineers, Quartermaster, Adjutant General’s Corps, and Finance Corps—all established in June 1775. These branches laid the groundwork for today’s highly structured and specialized military force.

           Soldiers at the Heart:

Behind the Army’s strength are the Soldiers—past and present—who have selflessly served. Their courage, teamwork, and dedication reflect the Army’s core values. Whether on the front lines or supporting missions worldwide, their contributions remain the foundation of the Army’s enduring success.

           A National Celebration:

The 250th anniversary is an opportunity to honor the Army’s rich history and the people who have shaped it. Commemorative events, including a parade and festival on the National Mall, will take place across the country, offering a chance to reflect, celebrate, and express gratitude.

           "This We'll Defend":

The Army’s motto captures its ongoing mission to protect and serve. From pioneering technologies to advancing medicine and transportation, the Army has played a critical role in shaping the world we live in today.

           Conclusion:

As we mark this remarkable 250-year journey, we thank the Soldiers, families, and civilians who have built and sustained the U.S. Army. Their service has defined our past—and will continue to secure our future.

           Call to Action:

           Pictures

A picture is worth a thousand words. Photos help bring memories to life, spark conversation, and celebrate a person's journey.

There are many ways to use pictures in a funeral service. You can:

Display printed photos on boards or in albums

Show a slideshow on a monitor or flat screen

Play a looping video with background music

Selecting photos can be a healing process. As family members sort through memories, stories often come up, helping shift focus from the loss to the life that was lived.

When planning how to share photos, consider timing. How long will guests be standing or watching? Talk to your funeral director—they can guide you on how to present pictures effectively, or even suggest showing more than one video during different parts of the service.

           Music

Music reflects a person’s life and personality. Whether it’s Frank Sinatra, a church hymn, or a rock anthem, the right music can bring comfort and connection.

Don’t be afraid to choose music that truly represents your loved one—even if it’s outside the traditional. Want to end the service with a favorite loud song? Ask. Your funeral director can help you include music in a way that’s meaningful and respectful.

           Stories

Stories help us remember. A good speaker can make us laugh, cry, and feel close to the person we’ve lost.

Choose your speakers carefully. Ask what they plan to say—surprises aren’t always welcome at funerals. This goes for clergy as well, especially if they didn’t know the deceased personally.

Ask your funeral director for advice on how many speakers to include and how long they should speak. Avoid repetition—hearing the same story twice can be awkward.

If no one in your circle is comfortable speaking, ask your funeral director if a Funeral Celebrant is available in your area.

           Passions

Passions help define a life. Whether it was a favorite team, a beloved hobby, or a meaningful career, these interests can be part of the service.

There are many ways to reflect a loved one’s passions:

            Personalized caskets or memorial items

Small keepsakes or favors for guests

Sharing a favorite recipe or hobby

Talk to your funeral director—they can help you find thoughtful ways to honor what mattered most to your loved one.

           Faith

When everyone shares the same faith, this part of the service often comes together easily. But differences in beliefs within a family can complicate planning.

Typically, the service reflects the beliefs of the deceased. If the person wasn’t religious but close family members are, sensitivity and compromise may be needed. Your funeral director can help navigate these discussions and offer solutions that respect everyone’s needs.

           In Summary

A meaningful funeral reflects the life lived and brings comfort to those left behind. It may include pictures, music, stories, faith, and personal passions.

Funeral directors are there to help, but they can’t know what matters unless you tell them. Families should communicate clearly and openly with each other and with the director. If something is important, say so.

With collaboration and thoughtful planning, the funeral can be a healing experience that honors your loved one and supports those who mourn.

Every year on June 6, we recognize the anniversary of the Normandy Invasion during World War II. The invasion by the Allied Forces established a foothold on the shores of France; and was the start of the Allied advance into the interior which eventually lead to victory in Europe and liberty for the millions of people living under the tyranny of Adolf Hitler. The costly battle was the most important allied victory in the second world war.

The campaign began on June 6 and ended on June 30. During that period 425,000 Allied and German troops were killed, wounded, or went missing. Many are buried in the 27 war cemeteries, ranging in size from 30 graves to 20,000, in Normandy.

The Normandy American Cemetery is the resting place for 9,387 Americans, most of whom gave their lives during the landing operations and in the establishment of the beachhead. The headstones are of white Italian marble adorned with a Star of David for those of Jewish faith and a Latin Cross for all others. The permanent cemetery is located on land France granted to the United States in perpetuity.

For those fortunate enough to visit the burial grounds, the experience is singular. Approaching alone or with a group the mood changes. Breathing slows, the chatter quiets, tones are hushed. The feeling is somber. It draws you in.

And then, there it is, pristine lush green lawn dotted by thousands of white markers in perfect formation overlooking the very beaches where those buried here fought and died.

Visitors are, at first, overwhelmed by the sheer number of markers. But as you get closer and begin to read the engravings, the reality of the cost of war begins to sink in. So many died, they were so very young, and all lost in such a short span of time.

All those lives ended before they ever really began. So many who would never find their true love, hold a new born child of their own, or buy a home. So many who never got to experience all the post war changes the rest of us take for granted. Those buried here did not live to see air travel become commonplace, a man land on the moon or watch a color television.

They were heroic and their sacrifice was great. We must never forget.

The anniversary is an opportunity to honor those lost. It is also an opportunity celebrate peace and reconciliation. In our mindfulness we become aware of the fragility of peace and the pain of war. It is that mindfulness that makes us better people.

In the words of the late John Lennon…

           Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Three Important Reasons to Preplan Your Funeral When Your Family Lives Far Away

            Why Planning Ahead Matters

            1. The First Call Comes When You're Least Prepared. Even when a death is expected, it still feels sudden. Families are often caught off guard and unsure of what to do first. The initial step—calling a funeral home—can feel overwhelming. If loved ones are unfamiliar with local options or difficult to reach, making this decision can be stressful and delayed. Preplanning ensures no one is left guessing or waiting.

           2. It's a Hard Time to Make Big Decisions. In the middle of grief and travel logistics, your family will be juggling emotions and responsibilities. Choosing between burial or cremation, selecting a service location, or even deciding what clothes you'll wear—all of it becomes harder in a moment of loss. Preplanning removes that burden, giving your family clear guidance and peace of mind.

            3. Give Your Family the Gift of Time Together. What your loved ones need most is each other. They need time to share memories, cry, laugh, and support one another. When you've made the big decisions in advance, you give them space to grieve and celebrate your life, not to stress over logistics. Your plan becomes a final, meaningful gift—one that lets them focus on love and legacy

What Is the Purpose and Meaning of Memorial Day?

With Memorial Day just around the corner, most do not know when and where it started or what it means to most people.

Memorial Day often marks the unofficial start of summer. It’s a three-day weekend—perfect for road trips, backyard barbecues, and time outdoors. In many places, it’s the first real taste of warm weather, a chance to gather with family and friends, clean off the grill, and break out the frisbee.

But before diving into the celebration of summer, it’s important to pause and remember why we have this holiday in the first place.

           Decoration Day

Communities across the country began setting aside a day to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags—a simple yet powerful gesture to honor their ultimate sacrifice.

By the late 1800s, Decoration Day had become an official holiday. After World War I, the focus of the day expanded to honor all American military personnel who died in any war. It was renamed

So yes, go to the parade. Fly the flag. Visit a cemetery. Take a moment of silence. Maybe even turn it into a family activity—ask questions, share stories, explore American history together. How many wars have we been part of? Why were they fought? Who served, and what did they give?

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

Scams are more common than ever—on the phone, online, and even at your front door. Whether you need help around the house or someone’s asking for a donation, it's important to stay alert and follow a few clear rules to protect yourself.

Rule 1: Don’t Hire Strangers Who Come to Your Door

If someone knocks and offers to do work like yard care, roof repairs, or window washing:

They may say they’re working nearby and offering a great deal.

They might try to earn your trust or create urgency by scaring you.

They often ask for money up front.

           What to do:

Don’t open the door to strangers. Only hire professionals you contact directly and who can provide references.

Rule 2: Don’t Share Personal Info Over the Phone or Internet

If someone calls, emails, or texts asking for personal details, donations, or purchases:

They may say it’s “free” or “for a good cause.”

They may pretend to be from the IRS or Social Security.

They may pressure or scare you.

           What to do:

Never give out information or send money. Simply say, “I don’t do that over the phone,” and hang up. Use call screening to avoid unknown callers.

Alkaline Hydrolysis, better known as Aquamation is another form of cremation.

Alkaline hydrolysis, also known as water cremation or aquamation, is a process that uses water,

cremation, offering a potentially more environmentally friendly option.

           How it works:

The deceased is sealed in a stainless steel chamber.

A heated solution of water and an alkaline compound (often potassium hydroxide or sodium

The combination of water, heat, and alkalinity gently breaks down the soft tissues, leaving

The remaining bone fragments are processed, similar to traditional cremation, to produce

Alkaline hydrolysis is generally considered more environmentally friendly than traditional

cremation, as it requires less energy and doesn't produce the same emissions.

           • Lower energy consumption:

It uses significantly less energy than traditional cremation.

           • No toxic emissions:

It doesn't produce the same amount of toxic emissions as traditional cremation.

           • Reduced burial space:

It can be a good alternative for those seeking to avoid traditional burial.

           Considerations:

Understanding Grief

           Let’s Talk About Grief

We have all experienced grief in one way or another, and one of life’s unpleasant truths is that we will experience it numerous times throughout our lives. Grief is a natural reaction to a significant loss and is essential in the emotional process of recovery.

Many people are under the impression that there are set “stages” of grief, however, this is an inaccurate portrayal. Some of the more common feelings that one may experience while grieving are denial, anger, guilt, and sadness- grief is simply not linear and cannot be scheduled. It is important that we allow ourselves to experience grief, however that may manifest. There is no set amount of time that can be considered “normal” and often the feelings of grief come and go for years after a great loss.

           Grief vs. Mourning

What is the difference? While they are quite similar in definition, grief and mourning are two separate things. In Psychology, grief is known as an internal reflection of loss, while mourning is the way that we outwardly express grief. Often the two go hand-in-hand when we lose somebody that we love.

Why is It Important to Mourn?

While there are parts of grief that we must handle on our own, mourning is important so that you are not alone. Humans are naturally social creatures and over time, our survival has depended on community and social connections. By mourning, we allow the people around us to take part in the grieving process with us. This can look like having a funeral service or celebration of life, talking and sharing memories about your loved one, or even celebrating anniversary dates such as birthdays.

Five Ways to Support Someone Who is Grieving

           · Actively Listening- Allow your loved one to express their feelings without judgement or input. Give them a safe space to talk about what they are experiencing.

           · Be Present- Let your loved one know that you are available for them, check in, and show up. Just knowing that someone is there to turn to can be a great comfort.

           · Acknowledge Their Loss- Offer comforting words and don’t minimize their feelings.

           · Show Patience and Understanding- Grief can be a rollercoaster of emotions and can be unpredictable; it may be long-lasting. Be patient and understand that your loved one’s emotions may fluctuate.

           · Offer Help- Offering help is a great way to show that you want to help; offer help with errands, childcare, cleaning, or meals.

Embalming is a professional procedure used to temporarily preserve the human body after death. The process is conducted in a hygienic, controlled setting and follows techniques comparable to clinical practices.

The procedure begins with cleansing and sanitizing the body. The limbs are gently massaged to alleviate natural postmortem stiffness. Facial features are then carefully positioned—eyes closed, mouth set—allowing for a natural, peaceful appearance. Using the body’s vascular system, blood is replaced with a preservative embalming solution. Internal cavities are treated to prevent decomposition, and the body is then groomed, with hair styled, cosmetics applied, and clothing arranged to prepare for viewing.

           Why Is Embalming Performed?

Embalming plays a crucial role in the grieving process. It allows families and loved ones the opportunity for a final viewing, often essential in acknowledging the reality of death, particularly in sudden or unexpected losses. Many find that seeing their loved one at peace offers comfort, closure, and an important step toward healing.

           Is Embalming a Historical Practice?

The practice of embalming dates back thousands of years. As early as 5000 BCE, the Chinchorro people of South America preserved their dead. Ancient Egyptians believed the soul would return to the body, leading to the development of elaborate embalming and mummification rituals. Similar practices were found among the Mayans, Aztecs, Tibetans, and Chinese nobility. Notably, the body of Xin Zhui, a Chinese noblewoman who died in 160 BCE, remains remarkably intact due to careful embalming techniques.

In North America, modern embalming became more widespread during the Civil War. Dr. Thomas Holmes, often referred to as the "father of American embalming," was commissioned to preserve the remains of fallen soldiers so they could be returned home for burial. His work laid the foundation for contemporary embalming standards.

           Is Embalming Legally Required?

There is no federal or provincial law in Canada or the United States that mandates embalming. However, certain circumstances—such as public viewings or extended delays between death and disposition—may necessitate it. Most funeral homes have guidelines regarding embalming based on the services selected. Funeral directors are available to explain all available options and help families make informed decisions.

Why Preplanning is a Good Thing for Parents

A Final Gift: Why Parents Should Consider Preplanning Their Funeral”

No one likes to imagine a time when they’re not around to help their children anymore. A parent’s job is never done, regardless of how old their children are. But there may be a time when a parent is no longer there physically for their children. However, there’s one final gift that any parent can give to their child: peace of mind through funeral preplanning.

By preplanning your funeral, you can spare your children additional stress and emotional conflict during one of the hardest moments of their lives.

           Why Parents Should Preplan?

           “Avoid Future Conflict Among Siblings.”

If you have several children, funeral planning can sometimes lead to conflict. Without clear instructions, each child may have a different idea of how to best honor your memory. In a time of grief, even small disagreements can escalate into painful disputes.

Preplanning eliminates guesswork. Your children will have one set of clear, written wishes to follow—yours. This helps reduce tension, allowing them to focus on supporting each other rather than debating difficult decisions.

Ease the Burden on an Only Child.

If you only have one child, they’ll likely shoulder the entire burden of making decisions. That can be an isolating and overwhelming experience, especially while navigating the intense emotions that come with losing a parent.

Preplanning offers that child reassurance—they won’t have to wonder if they’re doing the “right” thing. Your instructions will be a comforting guide, allowing them to grieve without the added weight of planning every detail.

Continue Guiding Them, Even When You're Gone

Parents never stop teaching, even in absence. Funeral preplanning allows you to provide one final act of guidance and love. It’s more than just stating preferences—it’s giving your children the peace of mind that comes from knowing they’re fulfilling your exact wishes.

Consider Prefunding to Remove Financial Worry

While preplanning sets the direction, prefunding eliminates financial uncertainty. Even with life insurance, families often face unexpected medical or legal expenses at the end of life. By prefunding your funeral, you can ensure that everything is covered—relieving your children from the burden of worrying about costs.

A funeral director can help you explore options for payment plans that work within your budget, allowing you to take care of these arrangements ahead of time.

Work With a Funeral Home for a Seamless Process

The best way to preplan—whether or not you choose to prefund—is to work directly with a funeral home. A funeral home will document your plans, help you understand your options, and ensure your wishes are clearly recorded in a secure place.

Today I’m sharing a few ideas for making the mother(s) in your life feel celebrated like the queens they are. Let’s face it: moms make the world go around. No matter how helpful our partners are (and some dads truly are superheroes), I don’t think anyone would argue the fact that mothers are the engine behind the operation. They know what everyone needs and when they need it. They juggle family dynamics and write lists and research nutrition and cleaning supplies and understand who their children are at the deepest level. Also, moms share food, use shirts to wipe snotty noses, and lay awake at night praying for guidance, wisdom, and safety over her family as they begin the whole thing over the next morning. Moms give of theirselves wholly, without a second thought, day in and day out.

So, they we deserve a nice little Mother’s Day weekend. Husbands, if you’re reading this, take notes.

           HISTORY OF MOTHERS DAY:

I decided to look up the history of Mother’s Day and boy howdy am I glad I did. It literally was never intended to be celebrated the way that it currently is. The very first sentence on Wikipedia says, “Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society.” I feel like that sentence right there proves my point and I don’t really need to go any further but you know me and I know I want to hear more of the history of Mother’s Day. In the United States, Mother’s Day was initiated by Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis. Julia was a peace activist and suffragette. Anna was also a peace activist. Julia first made her Mother’s Day proclamation in 1870, while Anna started her campaign for Mother’s Day in 1905 when her mother died. Julia Ward Howe urged the creation of Mother’s Day to celebrate peace and to promote “amicable settlement of international questions, the great and general interests of peace”. Anna wanted to honor this and argued that a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”. While the proposal was originally rejected in 1908 by 1911 all states were celebrating Mother’s Day. It was in 1914 that Woodrow Wilson signed the proclamation making Mother’s Day the second Sunday in May. It didn’t take long for Anna to regret founding Mother’s Day. By the early 1920’s Mother’s Day had already started to become commercialized, with Hallmark selling Mother’s Day cards, with the candy and flower industries following suit. Anna eventually started protesting Mother’s Day. While Mother’s Day was a success in the United States other countries were concerned with the narrow definition of Mother’s Day focusing on biological definition. Constance Adelaide Smith advocated for a Mothering Day instead.

Way to Honor Your Mothers Memory:

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the love, sacrifice, and warmth that mothers bring into our lives. But for those who have lost their mothers, this day can be filled with deep sorrow and longing. If you’re grieving this Mother’s Day, know that your feelings are valid, and you are not alone.

           1. Create a Memorial Tribute

Light a candle, display her favorite flowers, or set up a small memorial space with photos and keepsakes. Writing a letter to her or sharing stories with loved ones can also bring comfort.

           2. Visit Her Resting Place

Spending time at her gravesite or a place that was special to her can be a peaceful way to feel connected. Bring flowers, a handwritten note, or simply sit in quiet reflection.

           3. Continue Her Traditions

Did your mother have a favorite recipe, hobby, or charity she supported? Honoring her legacy by baking her signature dish, donating in her name, or engaging in her passions keeps her spirit alive.

After the loss of a pet, many people find ways to remember their beloved pet in a meaningful way, above and beyond a funeral service or celebration of life.

Below are some ideas for pet memorials to honor your friend and continue your healing journey.

            Make a Memorial Stone.

One of the most popular pet memorials is a unique and meaningful memorial stone for your yard. An emotional way to remember your pet is to paint and decorate a rock with their name and dates.

            Photo Tribute.

Put together a photo album or a digital slideshow of your pet’s best moments. This can help you feel better as you remember how much they improved your life.

            Plant a Memorial Garden.

Honor your pet by planting a tree or flowers that will grow over time.

Write a Letter or Poem to Your Pet.

You can share your thoughts and feelings with your pet in a letter or poem. Writing about your feelings can help you deal with your loss.

            Memory Jar.

Put notes from family and friends about your pet in a memory jar. Each note should include a special memory or story about your pet. This can help you feel better as you remember how much love and joy your pet brought into your life.

            Dedicate a Day of Service.

To honor the memory of your pet, take a day to volunteer at an animal shelter or rescue group in your area.

Remembering, as well as to be remembered, are natural human needs. Throughout

Two common options for this allow for many of the same traditional services, with only a

few differences: interment (burial) or entombment (mausoleum). Both options allow for a

family traditions are a factor in choosing.

So, what are some of the pros and cons of each? Let’s start with a traditional burial.

A traditional burial involves being interred into the ground and may include monumental

Moving on to entombment… entombment is also known as above-ground burial or

being placed in a crypt. This occurs in a mausoleum and involves placing a casket

Have you thought about what is
