Vernon Griffin

Vernon Chappel Griffin, 89, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, September 20, 2017, at his home. Born February 8, 1928, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Lattie Chappel Griffin and Carrie Mae Foster Griffin and husband of the late Margie Ila Lawter Griffin. A veteran of the U. S. Coast Guard, Mr. Griffin retired from Griffin & Son Builders and was a member of Beaumont Baptist Church. Survivors include his children, David C. Griffin (Carla) of Spartanburg, SC, and Phyllis G. Tilley (Christopher) of Las Vegas, NV; granddaughters, Angela L. Lee of Spartanburg, SC and Virginia Meritt of Roebuck, SC; grandsons, Liam Tilley and Harrison Tilley, both of Las Vegas, NV; and great-grandchildren, Brendan Lee, LeAnn Meritt, Lane Meritt, Maddox Meritt and Kamden Radford. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a son, Phillip W. Griffin; sisters, Gladys Lewis, Lillian Kirby, Grace Sims, and Virginia Griffin and brother, Chastain Griffin. A graveside service, with military rites, will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, September 22, 2017, in Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Keith Davis. Visitation will be at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 901 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302 online at www.alz.org.
