Surrounded by her family, Tammy Boothe Thornton, 57, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, passed away on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at Spartanburg Medical Center. Tammy was born in Dublin, Virginia on October 8, 1960 to Connie Baker Boothe and the late John Nelson Boothe. Graduating from the University of South Carolina with both a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Education, Tammy possessed a passion for teaching Business Education to high school students. She loved encouraging and challenging her students to fulfill their potential. Tammy began her teaching career at Boiling Springs High School before accepting a position at Daniel Morgan Technology Center. When Tammy retired after 28 years of instructing students in 2014, she had been teaching at Byrnes High School for nine years. Tammy was an active member of Southside Baptist Church where she taught Youth Sunday School, participated in women's organizations, and served on many committees. She was a sustaining member of The Lady Gainsborough Debutante Club and an active member of the Fannie Louise Holcombe Garden Club. Tammy lived life and served others with a gentle spirit and strong heart that will long be remembered by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her mother, Tammy is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Charles Erwin Thornton; daughter, Halie Thornton Nicol and son-in-law, Michael Gordon Nicol. Tammy's great blessing was her role as GiGi to her treasured grandchildren, Mason Palmer Nicol and Samantha Jane Nicol. Tammy is also survived by her brother, Scooter Boothe; sister-in-law, Kathleen Boothe; and nephew, Connor Boothe. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, February 18, 2018, at Southside Baptist Church, by The Rev. Dr. Schuyler Peterson. Visitation will follow the service in the church vestibule. A private family committal service will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 316 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
