Ray O'Neill Pettit, 92, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, June 19, 2017, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born April 18, 1925, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Walter R. and Lois Kennett Pettit and husband of the late Marie Orr Pettit. A 1942 graduate of Spartanburg High School and U. S. Army veteran, Mr. Pettit served in the European Theatre during World War II and was the honored recipient of the Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart, and Bronze Star Medals. He attended Community Bible Church in Boiling Springs, SC, was a Mason and member of St. Johns Lodge 333, Scottish Rites 32nd Degree, Hejaz Shriner, and life member of the VFW and Combat Infantryman's Association. He retired from Southern Bell after 38 years of service. Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Jean Riddle and her husband, Jesse, of Spartanburg, SC; grandson, Gary Dwayne Riddle; great-grandson, Louie Morris Riddle; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a son, Donald Ray Pettit; granddaughter, Teresa Riddle Belue; sisters, Margaret P. Larsen and Virginia P. Towery; and brother, J. Walter Pettit. Visitation will be 1:30-2:30 PM Thursday, June 22, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ondra Black. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of the graduates of Spartanburg High School Class of 1942, to Mobile Meals Service, PO Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or a charity of one's choice.
