Iris Gary

July 15, 1924 — December 26, 2017

Mrs. Iris Corbin Gary, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday evening, December 26, 2017, at her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Gary was born July 15, 1924 in Hampton County, SC the eldest child of the late William Edward Corbin and Minnie Mixon Corbin. She graduated from Hampton High School, received a BA from Columbia College in 1946 and an MA from the University of South Carolina in 1948. She was a retired history teacher from Dorman High. A lifelong learner she had traveled extensively throughout the world and was a voracious reader and greatly enjoyed her gardening. She was a founding member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church where she particularly loved her circle The Hope. She also was a member of the Writer's Guild at the Shepherd Center and enjoyed the company of her many fellow writers. She is survived by her children, COL(R) Robert H. Meek Jr. and wife Nancy of Hickory, NC and Nina G. Crawford and husband Robert of Moore, SC; grandchildren, Corbin E. Meek and wife Natalie of Charlotte, NC, CPT(P) Robert H. Meek III and wife Lindsay of Washington, DC, Capt. David T. Meek and wife Ashley of Cambridge, England, Caroline C. Laney and husband Brent of Moore, SC and Megan C. Crawford of Greenville, SC; great-grandchildren, Gwennie and Hudson Meek of Charlotte, NC, Munroe Meek of Washington, DC and Wyatt Laney of Moore, SC; a sister, Dorothy Bonnette of Orangeburg, SC; and a brother, Harold Corbin and wife Ava of North Augusta, SC. She was predeceased by husbands, 2LT Robert H. Meek and G. Thomas Gary; a sister, Irene Hurley; and a brother, W. Edward Corbin. Visitation will be 2:00-3:00 PM Sunday, December 31, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307, with funeral services following at 3:30 PM, conducted by The Rev. Dale Rawlings. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
