Henri Eschauzier

d. November 1, 2017

Henri Pierre Eschauzier, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away peacefully at home after a long heart-related illness. He was born in Rio de Janeiro, where his father Henri Frederik Eschauzier, one of Holland's leading diplomats, was posted. His mother Emma Arntzenius Eschauzier Cocke and his maternal grandparents Carolus Robert Hendrick Arntzenius and Johanna Alida Bouvin Artnzenius were all of the Netherlands. His paternal grandparents Wilhelm Gerard Joachim Eschauzier and Wilhelmina Paulina Antonia Reichmann Eschauzier were of Indonesia, where the family had sugar plantations for generations, and then the Netherlands. He is survived by his wife, Angelina Painter Eschauzier of Spartanburg, SC; sons, Marc William Frederick (Simon) Eschauzier and James Henri Eschauzier, both of the United Kingdom; half-brothers, Philip St. George Cocke V (Susan) of Greenwich, CT and John Ruffin Cocke (Diana) of Port Royal, VA; brother-in-law, Roy Manning Fowler (Patricia) of Spartanburg, SC; niece, Molly Fowler Haulbrook (Jeff) and nephew, Mark Bradford Fowler (Julie), both of Spartanburg, SC; and many other much-adored nieces, nephews and cousins living in the United States and Europe. His sister, Emma Eschauzier Luckenbach predeceased him. During World War II, Henri and his family lived for five years in German-occupied Holland while his father served in the resistance. After the war, Henri's father was posted to Washington, DC where Henri entered Horace Mann School and learned English. Later his father was posted to Ottawa, Canada. There Henri attended Ashbury College, a preparatory school, and then McGill University in Montreal. For most of Henri's career, he worked in the investment banking and institutional brokerage business in Canada, in the UK in London for 17 years and in the U. S. He headed offices for major firms in each of these countries. From an early age he was an avid skier and scuba diver. Later he became interested in equestrian activities, especially hunting in England, polo and tennis. Music was a prominent element in his life, and he inherited a special love of classical music and opera while living in Vienna with his father and stepmother, Amelie Janssen. He was a competitive bridge player, yet enjoyed teaching and playing with friends, his son and wife, which was typical of his patient and kindly nature. His abiding interest was world politics and history, likely due to his father being one of the prime architects of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. This interest propelled Henri around the world. His keen observance of human nature, instant smile and sparkling eyes, drew friends to him. A friend said "All of his life he has been in the center of all joyous global gatherings." Henri spent 25 years living in New York City and there met "his darling Angelina" as he would say. While there he became the president of the Huguenot Society of America and a governor of the Knickerbocker Club, devoting much time and energy and passion to both groups. His Huguenot heritage on both sides of his family brought him in touch with relatives worldwide. He and Angelina moved to Spartanburg in 2013. With his charm and elegance he quickly became a true Southern gentleman. He adored his new home and friends.
