Eunice Hodges

Elizabeth Eunice Purnell Hodges, 92, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born August 12, 1922, in Richmond, VA, she was the daughter of the late Evelyn Byrd Tredway Purnell and Rhesa Hawkins Purnell. Eunice was a member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon and elder. A graduate of Converse College, she also attended Richmond School of Social Work, Virginia Commonwealth College, and was a social worker for the American Red Cross for several years. She was a former member of the Junior League, Colonial Dames of America, the Daughters of the American Colonists, and the Book Ends Club. She also served on several Boards in the community and volunteered her services at Mary Black Memorial Hospital, the Soup Kitchen, and Charles Lea Center. Surviving are her sons and daughters-in-law, Rupert Edward Hodges, Jr. and his wife Sally and Rhesa Purnell "Penny" Hodges and his wife Nancy, all of Spartanburg, SC, George Heyward Hodges and his wife Loïcka of Jackson, MS, and Thomas Tredway Hodges and his wife Erroll Anne of Greenville, SC; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her daughter, Evelyn. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 1, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans. Immediately following the service, the family will receive friends in the Purnell Room. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Purnell Fund c/o First Presbyterian Church, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or a charity of one's choice.
