Bernice Dunn

July 15, 1924 — January 23, 2018

Bernice Franklin Dunn of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, January 23, 2018. Born July 15, 1924 to Fred and Nonnie Riley Franklin in Benton, KY, she spent most of her life in Jacksonville, FL with her adoring husband, the late S. R. Dunn. Bernice was a dedicated member of Faith United Methodist Church, Jacksonville, FL and a staunch Democrat. She rooted faithfully (and loudly) for the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team and was a feisty competitor in family games of dominoes and Phase 10. Rarely seen without her trademark pink lipstick, she was a graceful, beautiful woman with a quick wit. Bernice won awards for public speaking at Toastmasters International and used her gifts to deliver dramatic readings from the perspective of women in the Bible at churches in the southeast. She played golf and tennis and enjoyed taking walks. Loving nature and travel, Bernice documented her life in photographs. Her love of reading has been passed on to her many descendants. Surviving are two sisters, Rubye Clayton of Kansas and Alice Jones (Marvin) of Texas; her daughters, Carol Fisher (Philip), Sandy Starbird, and Judy Rhodes (Steve); 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by 5 brothers and sisters. Her life will be celebrated at Faith United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, FL on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at 10:30 AM. Friends may meet with the family from 9:30-10:15 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 9801 Southern Pines Blvd. Suite I, Charlotte, NC 28273, or online at www.nmss.org/donate; or Faith United Methodist Church Missions Fund, 4000 Spring Park Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
